Carmen Contreras, age 85, of St. Thomas, ND passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, surrounded by family and close friends.

Carmen was born August 13, 1932 in Winterhaven, TX, the daughter of Catarino Sr & Josefina C. Surita. Carmen married Juan Jose Contreras on April 22, 1950 in Carrizo Springs, TX. The couple made their home in St. Thomas, ND and Crystal City, TX.

She was a member of St. Anne’s Church in Auburn, ND and St. John’s Catholic Church in Grafton, ND.

Carmen loved being surrounded by her family and longtime close friends. She welcomed many into her home for a feast. She enjoyed listening to music, cooking, dancing, as well as watching Spanish novelas and Mexican baseball. She loved to attend sporting events that her children and grandchildren participated in and loved when they gathered together for celebrations.

She is preceded in death by three children, parents Catarino & Josefina Surita; sister, Virginia Dominguez; brother, Mario (Juanita) Surita and grandchild Paige Contreras. She is survived by brothers: Oscar (Carmen) Surita of Crystal City, TX and Catarino (Maria) Surita Jr. of Grafton, ND, and 10 children: Janie (Felipe) Martinez, Joe (Charlene) Contreras, Lupe Contreras, David (Brenda) Contreras, Elojio “Billy” Contreras, Frank (Jennifer) Contreras Sr., Mary Contreras, all of St. Thomas, ND. Hilda (Wayne) Kuntz, Eckelson, ND, Guadalupe Contreras, Crystal City, TX and Carlos Contreras, Kansel, ND, 35 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the church. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at the St. Thomas City Cemetery.
