Barbara A. Kalgard

Barbara (Cole) Kalgard, age 79, of Park River, ND passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on August 17, 2015 at Good Samaritan nursing center, Park River. The youngest of ten children in her immediate family, she was born August 6, 1936 to the late Norman and Anna (Kadlec) Cole of Park River. She received her education from the Park River Elementary School and the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Myron Kalgard, in 1954. Together they raised a family of five children. Myron passed away December 31, 2010. Barbara lived her life as a homemaker, but for several years took time to work in several different departments at the Walsh County Press, predominantly typesetting the newspaper. She also wrote several columns including the weekly "Streams in the Dessert" and "Special Person Award" and others of interest. She also worked for a time at Wayne's Variety and Gifts in Park River. She is survived by her family of 5 children: Sheila Kalgard of Fargo, ND, Kim Kalgard and his wife Anna of Park River, Julie Kalgard of Grand Forks, ND, Chad Kalgard of Park River and Wade Kalgard of Park River, five grandchildren: Kory Kalgard of Park River, Lindsay (Josh) Jelinek of Pisek, ND, Kiley Kalgard and her friend Andrew Dusek of Grafton, ND, Jason Kalgard of Grand Forks, ND, Kali (Justin) Shannon of Pleasant Hills, IA, step-grandsons: Jan Elias of Brno, Czech Republic, Jiri Marek of Winnipeg, Canada, five great-grandchildren: Gunnar Kalgard, Jaylie, Cadance and Keira Jelinek and Rylie Shannon, brothers: William (Heather) Cole of Williston, ND, Dennis (Minnie) Cole of Park River, Norman (Marie) Cole of Grand Forks, ND, sisters: Dorothy Libby of Mesa, AZ, Willane (Roland) Ulstad of Madison, MN, and Norma (Wes) Larson of Williston, ND, sister-in-law Juliann Cole of Sun City, AZ and several nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Myron, parents Norman and Anna Cole of Park River, brothers: Harvey and Duane Cole, sister, Evelyn Bowen, brothers-in-law: Norbert Libby and Theron Bowen, sisters-in-law: Naomi (Parks) Cole and Erna (Flaten) Cole. Funeral services will be Monday, August 24, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Park River. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may also call at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Golden Valley Cemetery, Rural Park River.
