Amos L Flaten

March 12, 1935 — March 4, 2018

Amos Leon “Mosey” Flaten, 82, Park River, ND, died Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Amos L. Flaten was born March 12, 1935 in Grafton, ND, to Amos G. and Ida (Lien) Flaten. He attended rural schools and graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River and later the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND, where he studied welding and farming.

After college, he started farming on his own, northeast of Park River. He married Marge Delvo in 1953. They made their home in Park River. Mosey married Darlene L. Okeson July 1, 1969 in Grafton, ND. The couple lived in Park River and Mosey continued farming until retiring in 2001. Darlene passed away May 24, 2014 and Mosey moved to the Good Samaritan Center in October of 2014.

In his earlier years, Mosey was very active outside of his farm work – he excelled at water and snow skiing, ski jumping, curling and also liked to hunt, snowmobile and go camping with his family. He and Darlene enjoyed traveling around to watch their sons and grandsons play hockey too. As a lifelong resident of Park River, he was proud of his hometown and supported many community efforts, business ventures and his church through volunteer work and philanthropy.

He was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, the Park River Volunteer Fire Department, the Jaycees, the Walsh County Curling Club and other groups over the years. He also served on the board of directors at the Farmers Union Elevator in Park River. Having farmed with his father starting at a young age, he loved his profession and even after retirement always looked forward to driving out to look at the fields and offer his experienced advice to the next generation.

Amos is survived by his children: Jeff (Karen) Flaten and Todd Flaten, Park River; Jacqueline Flaten (Christopher Breitling), Fremont, CA; Dean (Deb) Flaten, Moorhead, MN; Julie Flaten and Dennis (Jeane) Flaten, Park River; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and sister: Judy Engelmann, Grand Forks. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; son, Mitchell J.; parents; brothers: Duane, Irwin “Bud”, Marvin “Sonny”, twin brother Ander “Andy”; and sister, Erna Cole.
