Allen C. Groven

April 20, 1934 — May 21, 2019

Allen Charles Groven, 85, of Windsor, Colorado, formerly of Grafton, North Dakota, passed away May 21, 2019 at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado.

Allen was born April 20, 1934, in Grafton, N.D. to Albert and Mae (Thompson) Groven. After graduating from Grafton High School in 1952, Allen joined the US Army where he was a Track Vehicle Specialist. On May 17, 1957, he married the love of his life, Monica Houska, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grafton.

Allen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. in 1960. He went on to work as a civil engineer and forest engineer for the US Forest Service for over 30 years.

Allen loved his family and fully supported them in all of their endeavors. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, camping, skiing, canoeing, gardening and hiking. He was a long-standing member of the National Rifle Association and American Legion, Post #41. Along with his love of the outdoors, he patiently shared his wisdom, experience and deep faith with his family, friends and hundreds of young men through his long-term and active involvement with the Boy Scouts of America.

Allen is survived by his wife of 62 years, Monica Groven; children Paul (Connie) Groven of Olympia, Wash., Annette (Vince) Tannel of Windsor, Colo., Michelle (Eric) Groven Nelson of Redford, Mich., and Chris (Ruth) Groven of Geneva, Ill; grandchildren Shannah, Allyson, Marissa, Jessica, Nathan, Cori Anne, Mitchell, Stephanie, Luke, Carl, Elaine, Monica, Mary, Reier, Leah, and Ellie; eleven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his step-father Henry Lian; sister-in-law Dolores Robinson; brothers-in-law Phil Robinson and Forrest Isaacson.

Memorial services will be Friday, June 28, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the Grafton Lutheran Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery of rural Hoople, ND. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Allen’s honor to the Boy Scouts of America or the American Heart Association.
