Alice Rustan, age 104, of Park River, ND passed away Thursday, January 18, 2018 at the Valley 4000, Woodside Village of Grand Forks, ND.
Alice Nygard was born November 8, 1913 on the Andrew Nygard farm near Edinburg, ND, the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna (Thorson) Nygard. She was confirmed at Odalen Lutheran Church. She graduated from the Walsh County Agriculture School in 1933. She attended Mayville State Teacher’s College and taught country school for ten years. A lover of music, Alice attended McPhail School of Music in Minneapolis and taught piano lessons to a number of students throughout the years. Alice sang in the church choir and also at various church functions. Alice was united in marriage to George Rustan of Milton, ND on June 29, 1941. George passed away on June 1, 1974. Alice worked as a bookkeeper for Rustan Construction and later in the Activity Department at the Good Samaritan Center in Park River.
She was a member of the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Park River. Her faith was an important part of her life. She served as the first Dean of Women when the Park River Bible Camp opened in the late 30’s. Throughout her life she was actively engaged in the church, teaching Sunday school and serving in various groups and organizations.
Alice was the last surviving member of the Andrew Nygard family of 11 children. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers; Amund, Ingvold, Alf, Johnnie, Lloyd and Clifford and four sisters; Lily, Calma, Agnes and Emma. She is survived by her daughter, Georgia (Tom) DeSautel, Rockton, IL and Char Brekke, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren: Kerry (Chris) Fellers and Greig (Debi) DeSautel and great-grandchildren: Kanyon Fellers, Kendall Fellers, Trever DeSautel and Jarrett DeSautel; sister-in-law, Martha Nygard and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Park River. Visitaiton will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery of Park River. A visitation and family friend gathering with lunch and a time of sharing will follow the service.
