Alice L Olson

Alice Louise Olson, age 97 of Park River, ND passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center, Park River, ND.

Alice was born on February 7, 1920 in Grand Forks, ND, daughter of the late Wesley and Nancy (Bloomquist) Shortridge. She grew up in Hannah, ND, where she graduated from Grey Consolidated High School in 1938. Alice graduated from Bemidji State Teachers College in 1940 and taught in various ND schools until she married Earl L. Olson of Park River, ND on January 23, 1952.

Alice treasured her role as wife, mother and homemaker. She lovingly and joyfully assumed the care of her two adopted daughters. Alice was active in numerous community organizations and a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Park River. She frequently worked in the Olson Hardware Store, owned by her husband, Earl, and she also worked at times as a teacher’s aide in the Park River elementary school.

Alice lived in her home on Veterans Avenue until 2007 when she moved into the Sunrise Apartments, adjacent to the Good Samaritan Center. She moved into the Good Samaritan Center on June 12, 2015. The Christian environment at Good Sam suited Alice where she enjoyed daily devotions and other social activities. She frequently commented on how fortunate she has been to live in the wonderful community of Park River.

Alice is survived by her children: Joanne Olson of Tampa, FL and Earlene (Fred) Guinn of Maryland; her three grandchildren, Kendal (Lee) Manson, Marlon (Andrew) Guinn, and Torrey Guinn; her two great-grandchildren Theo and Merritt; her sisters, Donna Kingzett of Munich, ND, Joanne Haug of Golden Valley, MN; her brothers Calvin (Cyrilla) Shortridge of Grand Forks, ND and Jack (Daunine) Shortridge of Denver, CO; numerous nieces and nephews; and Linda Larson, her devoted friend and companion of recent years.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Earl who died on March 11, 1990, her brother Russell (Isabel) Shortridge, her sister Alayne Shortridge, her brother-in-law J.C. Kingzett and sister-in-law Shirley Shortridge.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 7, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Park River. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery of Park River.
