Alice Hankey

December 19, 1917 — May 11, 2015

Alice Hankey, age 97 of Park River, ND passed away on Monday, May 11, 2015 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton. Alice Novak was born December 19, 1917 in Pisek, ND, the daughter of the late Steve and Rose (Cicha) Novak. She grew up and attended rural school near Pisek. She was united in marriage to Carl Hankey Jr. on August 19, 1946 in Pisek, ND. The couple lived and farmed in Rural Park River. In their retirement, the couple enjoyed to travel, making trips to Canada, Mexico, South America, China, Australia, Ireland, Europe, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Panama, and New Zealand. Carl passed away on June 6, 1994. Alice moved into the Park River Good Samaritan Center Apartments in March of 2006 and in March of 2013 she moved into the Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton, ND. Alice was active in curling, bowling and many other clubs and organizations. She loved playing cards with friends. She enjoyed spending time in her garden and sharing her baking with family and friends. Alice will be remembered for her delicious potato salad, kolaches and her love of life. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Altar Society of Park River. She served as President of the Altar Society during the construction of the church. She served as President of the Park River American Legion Auxiliary Paul Farup Unit 147 for one year; served many years as Co-chair of Preparations for the Park River Memorial Day Program honoring Veterans and Legionaires, and participated as Legion Auxiliary Color Guard at many patriotic events. She was an avid volunteer and was very community minded. She was eager to lead projects at the American Legion, such as collecting pop can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. She was a finalist for Farm Women of the Year in 1986. Alice is survived by her children: Michael (Gale) Hankey, Scottsdale, AZ, Katherine (Michael) Pickett, Bismarck, ND, Steven (Amy) Hankey, Orono, MN, grandchildren: Kyle (Mary Blanche) Hankey, Washington, DC, Scott (Scarlett) Hankey, Houston, TX, Gerri (William) Lorenz, Grand Forks, ND, Katharine (Patrick) Locken, Veyrier, Switzerland, Elizabeth (Paul) Fiedler, Bismarck, ND, Steven Hankey Jr., Blacksburg, VA, Peter Hankey, Brainerd, MN, Samuel Hankey, Minneapolis, MN, great grandchildren: William Hankey, Corinne Hankey, Jaxton Lorenz, Ty Lorenz, Cael Lorenz, Luke Locken, Lauren Locken, Eve Locken, and Scarlett Fiedler. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Hankey Jr. in 1994, son James Hankey in 1972, parents Steve & Rose Novak, brothers: George Novak and Lawrence Novak, sisters: Beatrice Jergenson and Steffie Daley. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, May 18, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Park River. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:30-7:30 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:30 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may also call at the church for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery of Park River. Alice's family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Lutheran Sunset Home. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery Fund in Park River.
