Mavis E. Nelson

Mavis E. Nelson, age 82 of Park River, ND passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks.

Mavis Elaine Horpestad was born July 10, 1935 on the family farm near Hampden, ND the daughter of the late Joakim and Emma (Ramsey) Horpestad. She attended rural schools near Hampden and graduated from Hampden High School in 1954. She worked at the Lawrence Wilkes Farms and Sales Barn in Langdon and Park River. Mavis was united in marriage to Roger Nelson on December 20, 1957 in Velva, North Dakota. The couple lived in Adams until 1962 when they moved into Park River. Mavis worked as a bookkeeper for the Sales Barn, Ohnstad Oil Company, the Soil Conservation Office, and the Park River Park Board, retiring in 2015.

She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and WELCA, the Martha’s circle and the St. Ansgar’s Hospital Auxiliary.

Mavis is survived by her husband, Roger of Edmore, ND; her daughter: Melaine (Lyle) Korynta, Glyndon, MN; three granddaughters: Amanda Korynta, (Cody Asperheim), Katlin (Brady) Timme and Lauren Korynta (Michael Enfield), her mother-in-law, Lyla Nelson, Park River, ND; three sisters: Esther Dahl, Seattle, WA; Gladys Martinson, Devils Lake, ND; Marion (Dennis) Hoffart, Grand Forks, ND. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 2, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Park River, ND. Visitation will Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 5-7 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may also call at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River, ND in the spring.
