Herman A. Schuster Herman Arnold Schuster entered eternal life January 4th, 2014 at his home in Warsaw at the age of 83. Herman was born on July 8th, 1930 in Grafton, ND, the son of Harry and Eva (Stoltman) Schuster. Herman attended a country school near his parent's farm as well as St. Stanislaus Catholic School and Drayton School. In November of 1948, he joined the US Army, receiving basic training at Ft. Riley, Kansas and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. In October 1950, he was called to active duty and left for Korea to join the front line during the Korean Conflict. After one year, he was discharged and returned home to North Dakota. On May 19th, 1953, Herman married Leona Marie Gerszewski, they lived by old Highway 44 and operated Schuster's Ace Service. They started farming in 1955 and moved to the Stoltman family farm in 1957, where they lived until moving to Warsaw in 1991. Herman and Leona raised five sons: Roger, Dean, Wayne, Jeff and Brian and have 14 grandchildren. Herman and Leona spent their summer months between their home in Warsaw, ND, and their fishing retreat in Warroad, MN, and their winter months in Mesa, AZ. An avid outdoorsman, Herman enjoyed fishing and hunting of all types...putting many a fine meal on the table for his family. In his early years, his trap shooting earned him many accolades in the area, he was also an avid bowler, earning numerous 1st place finishes in various tournaments throughout the area. Further pursuing the freedom offered by the outdoors, Herman earned his private pilot's license in 1955. Herman and Leona traveled the US with their motor home for many years, and took several trips overseas to enjoy what the world had to offer, including a trip to Poland during the summer of 2007. Herman was instrumental in founding and building the first cooperative sugar beet factory in North America in Hillsboro, ND. From 1972 thru 1975 he served on the board of the Red River Valley Cooperative which was later merged with American Crystal Sugar Company. Committed to developing a better community, Herman was a School Board member for 24 years, served as Walsh County NFO President for 5 years, and was a member of the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. Surviving Herman are his wife of 60 years, Leona, 4 sons: Roger (Sandy) of Warsaw, ND; Wayne of Flowery Branch, GA; Jeff (Donna) of Raleigh, NC; and Brian (Mary) of Minto, ND, daughter-in-law, Diane Schuster, Chicago, IL and 14 grandchildren; brother Ken (Judy) of Grand Forks, ND; and sisters Evelyn Feltman of Grand Forks, ND; and Theresa Lambert of Seattle, WA; Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Eva, two brothers, Eugene and Joseph, and one son Dean. Shed a tear with us today not for the loss we have incurred, but to celebrate the joy we all shared with our dad along the way...Mountain Man is now at his new home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, January 10, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Warsaw. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Friends may also call at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the church cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Minto American Legion Post #201 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Memorials are preferred to the Minto American Legion Post #201 at 110 Ordway Ave. Minto, ND 58261, or the Minto Quick Response at P.O. Box 204, Minto, ND 58261
